In the 1400's people were given the freedom of reading the Bible in their own language and renewed understanding developed. Those who believed you received salvation by grace through faith, that the Holy Spirit helps you understand Scripture, that you are individually responsible in your relationship with God, that New Testament churches were self-governing and that baptism was done for someone who expressed belief and faith in Christ were called Anabaptists. The Radical Reformation was defined by persecution and death. This was the beginning of separation of church and state, the openess of the gospel to everyone, and the distinction of non-violence. As they scattered to find safe places, these ideas spread.
